Safe Kids of Northeast Florida, a local nonprofit group that helps protect children in the area, has released a list of the top five mistakes parents make with their young children.

The No. 1 mistake on the list is not having a safe sleeping environment for babies.

Pillows, blankets, stuffed animals and crib bumpers, as tempting as they may be to put in a baby’s crib, are dangerous. Newborns and babies can suffocate on any of them.

The only thing that should be in a baby’s bassinet or crib is the baby and a tight-fitting crib sheet.

If you’re worried about your baby getting cold, buy a sleep sack for the child. It zips around the baby’s body and can’t get over the tot’s mouth.

The second most common mistake parents of young children make is holding a baby while cooking or carrying hot foods and liquids.

Most burns in young children happen between 6 months and 2 years old and are caused by spilling something by accident on the child.

The No. 3 mistake is leaving a baby unattended in the bathtub.

Last year, an 18-month-old drowned in a bathtub in a home on the Westside. Police said a friend of the family was bathing the toddler and left to answer the phone. They said she was gone for at least 10 minutes.

Stephanie Smith pleaded guilty to manslaughter and spent a year in jail for the boy’s death.

Never leave a child unattended in a bath for even a second.

The fourth most common mistake parents of young children make is moving them to a forward-facing car seat too early.

Parents should buy a car seat that allows their children to stay rear-facing as long as possible. Many seats allow children to stay rear-facing until they’re 2 years old.

At a minimum, Safe Kids of Northeast Florida said do not turn them to a forward-facing seat until they are at least 1 year old and at least 20 pounds.

No. 5 on the list of most common mistakes parents make with their children is underestimating them.

Babies roll over, sit up and walk at different ages. No child is exactly the same. So as soon as you bring your child home from the hospital, start thinking right away about getting your home ready for every stage.

Don’t leave a newborn on a couch or bed unattended because the baby could roll off. Don’t underestimate the child being able to reach stairs in your home and fall.

There’s always a first when it comes to babies and toddlers.
